Guadeloupe is an exceptional destination for ocean and nature lovers. But when it comes to observing cetaceans in Guadeloupe, one area stands out in particular: the Côte Sous-le-Vent.

Located on the west coast of Basse-Terre, between Bouillante, Pointe-Noire and Deshaies, this wild and preserved coastline offers ideal conditions to encounter dolphins, sperm whales, and humpback whales in their natural environment.

At Soleil Excursions, we are fortunate to explore this area all year round from the port of Baillargent in Pointe-Noire, and every trip confirms just how unique this coastline truly is

The "Côte Sous-le-Vent" in Guadeloupe : An ideal geography for Cetaceans

If so many marine mammals are found in the waters of the Côte Sous-le-Vent, it is no coincidence.

Here, the seabed quickly drops into deep waters. Just a few kilometers from the coast, depths already reach several hundred, even thousands, of meters.

This underwater landscape creates a particularly rich feeding environment, naturally attracting many cetacean species.

Sperm whales, for example, favor these deep waters for hunting dives, while humpback whales come to enjoy the warm and calm waters of Guadeloupe during their migration season.

Observing dolphins in Guadeloupe all year round

One of the great privileges of the Côte Sous-le-Vent is the almost permanent presence of dolphins.

During our sea excursions, it is common to encounter:

  • Atlantic spotted dolphins,

  • spinner dolphins,

  • Fraser dolphins,

  • and bottlenose dolphins.

Often active and playful, they provide spectacular sightings. Some groups include dozens, sometimes even hundreds, of individuals.

Every encounter is different:sometimes dolphins surf the bow of the boat, sometimes they hunt, play, or simply travel peacefully beneath the incredible morning light.

Sperm whales : Fascinating residents of Guadeloupean waters

The Côte Sous-le-Vent is also one of the best areas to observe sperm whales in Guadeloupe.

Unlike humpback whales, which are only present during the winter season, sperm whales can be seen all year long.

These giants of the deep fascinate observers with both their size and behavior.

Thanks to the hydrophone on board, it is sometimes possible to listen to their powerful clicks underwater, used to communicate and hunt in the depths.

Some observations remain unforgettable:social groups resting at the surface, young sperm whales, resting behaviors, or spectacular dives revealing their immense tail before disappearing into the blue.

Listening to Humpback Whale Songs in Guadeloupe

From December to April, the waters of Guadeloupe welcome majestic humpback whales.

They come here to breed and give birth in warmer and calmer waters than those of the North Atlantic.

This season sometimes offers absolutely magical moments :

  • mothers accompanied by their calves,

  • gentle and curious behaviors,

  • breaches,

  • pectoral fin or tail slaps,

  • and above all… their songs.

On board Soleil Excursions, the hydrophone sometimes allows guests to listen live to these fascinating vocalizations directly from the boat.

A rare and deeply moving experience.

Respectful and responsible whale watching

Observing cetaceans is a privilege that comes with great responsibility.

On the Côte Sous-le-Vent, committed professionals follow the guidelines of the AGOA Sanctuary to minimize human impact on marine wildlife.

At Soleil Excursions :

  • approach distances are respected,

  • engines are slowed down or turned off when necessary,

  • and every observation is conducted in a respectful and educational way.

Because the beauty of these encounters depends above all on preserving the wild world.

A different experience every time

This is probably what makes observing cetaceans in Guadeloupe so special:no two trips are ever the same.

The sea changes, the light changes, behaviors evolve, and the animals remain completely free.

Some days bring hundreds of dolphins, others the distant songs of whales, sometimes a group of sperm whales resting motionless at the surface… and sometimes simply the raw beauty of the ocean.

And that unpredictability is exactly what makes every excursion unique.
